Pacific Northwest Elopement Photographer: Why your PNW wedding deserves More Than a an hour or two
The Pacific Northwest has a reputation for moody, atmospheric beauty. The Oregon coast in fog. The ancient Douglas firs of the Hoh Rainforest. The volcanic drama of Mount Rainier or the Three Sisters. The Columbia River Gorge with its layer upon layer of waterfall-laced basalt. This is a landscape that rewards patience, rewards the couples willing to stand in the rain, and absolutely rewards couples who hire an elopement photographer who knows how to work with what the PNW gives you rather than fighting it.
We're Amanda and Joe of Kamp Adventures, a wife + husband team of elopement photographers, videographers and creative directors who live full-time in our campervan and have been through 25+ national parks and counting. The Pacific Northwest is one of our most-loved regions to work in. Not despite the rain. Because of it.
What Makes the Pacific Northwest Different to Shoot In
The PNW demands a different photographic approach than, say, Joshua Tree or Big Sur. In the desert, you're working with hard, directional light and graphic compositions. In the PNW, you're working with atmosphere. Think soft diffused light, layered greens, mist that moves through old-growth canopy in ways that feel actively cinematic. It's a landscape that rewards slowness and rewards film.
We shoot 35mm film on almost every PNW elopement. The grain and the tonal range of analog photography translates the mood of the Pacific Northwest in a way that digital captures accurately but doesn't always feel. The images end up looking like they belong to the landscape rather than being placed in front of it.
Joe's films from the Pacific Northwest lean toward the atmospheric. Slower, more deliberate, with the kind of natural sound design (rain on old-growth canopy, the sound of the coast, fire in a forest camp) that makes you feel like you're back there every time you watch it.
Our Favorite Pacific Northwest Elopement Locations
The Oregon Coast
The southern Oregon coast is what we'd recommend to any couple who wants Big Sur drama without Big Sur crowds. Boardman State Scenic Corridor has some of the most dramatic sea stacks and arch formations on the Pacific coast, many of which require only a short walk from the highway. Samuel H. Boardman is particularly extraordinary. Its a stretch of protected coast that most people drive past without stopping. We fell in love the first time we went there years ago and have been back countless times, so we know exactly where to stop.
The northern coast around Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park is more well-known but still produces extraordinary images. Haystack Rock at low tide, early morning before the beach fills up, is one of those iconic PNW locations that earns its reputation. We time these sessions around tide charts so you don’t have to worry about sneaker waves.
Olympic National Park, Washington
Olympic is one of the most ecologically diverse national parks in the country. You can move from temperate rainforest to alpine meadow to wild Pacific coastline within a single day. The Hoh Rainforest is an obvious anchor for any PNW elopement: the Hall of Mosses is genuinely unlike anywhere else on earth, and the green, filtered light through old-growth maple is one of the most otherworldly shooting environments we've worked in.
Olympic requires Special Use Permits for ceremonies, as does most any national park. But don’t stress - we help you navigate permits and permissions as part of our planning process.
Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
Rainier has views are make you feel like you’re in another part of the world. Wildflower season from late July through August turns the subalpine meadows into something that looks like a painting. Paradise and Sunrise are the obvious destinations, but we know the quieter approaches that avoid the peak day-hiker traffic.
The permit and reservation system at Rainier has evolved in recent years to manage congestion - it can be a tricky permit to secure if you’re not flexible. Always verify current entry requirements at nps.gov/mora before planning your date.
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon/Washington
The Gorge is underrated as an elopement destination. The waterfall corridor along the Historic Columbia River Highway — Multnomah Falls, Latourell, Crown Point are stunning in every season. In spring, the waterfalls run at full volume and there are almost no other visitors. In fall, the deciduous canopy turns the entire canyon gold. The Gorge is also home to one of our more accessible PNW locations for couples who don't want a significant hike.
getting cozy in the Pacific Northwest
We spend genuine time in every region we work in before we shoot there. In the PNW that means camping in the rainforest, timing tides on the Oregon coast, and driving the Gorge corridor in different seasons to understand how the light and the waterfall volume change. When we recommend a specific time for your ceremony or a specific location within a park, it comes from firsthand experience.
After your vows, we can point you to the best bowl of pho in Portland, the oyster shack on the Oregon coast worth driving twenty minutes off the main road for, and the campground in Olympic that actually has hot showers. Working with Kamp extends well past the photography & video.
When to Elope in the Pacific Northwest
The honest answer: any time, if you go in with the right expectations. Summer (July–September) is the most reliably dry, and the window for alpine wildflowers is specifically July and August. Fall (October–November) brings dramatic color and moody atmosphere perfect for film photography and atmospheric video work. Winter and spring mean heavy rain in most of the region, which we genuinely love for the coast and the rainforest. If the idea of rain during your ceremony sounds romantic rather than alarming, the PNW off-season might be exactly right for you.
We always build weather contingency into every PNW plan. The best days we've had in this region have involved last-minute pivots that produced images we couldn't have planned.
Working With Us in the PNW
Our Pacific Northwest elopement packages include full creative direction, location design, 35mm film and digital photography, cinematic video, and on-site scouting. We’re on-site before every elopement in this region. The van is parked, the coffee is already made, and we've already confirmed conditions before you arrive.
If the Pacific Northwest is calling you for your elopement, reach out. Tell us if you’re feeling drawn to the coast, the old-growth, the mountains, the rain and we'll start building the day from there.
